Fresh out the slammer, Hazel Hawkins is back on the streets and out for revenge. With her rag-tag crew behind her, Hazel’s weaving the web for one last job. It’s a dangerous game. She’s always had friends in low places, but how does the plan change when you tango with a new sort? With so many drawn knives and turned backs, who knows how the curtain will fall? Waltzing into a West Village near you, drenched from the March rain, the 2024 Outpatient Collective presents; The Smoking Gun: It’s More than Petty Theft.
My design for The Smoking Gun pulls from the architecture of San Francisco as featured in countless noir films, with dirt and grunge spilling out the seams reflecting the corruption and decay of the city. The set needed to be as huge and sprawling as the story, with space for a five piece jazz band including drums, a stand up bass, piano, saxophone, and trumpet player. With so many scenes that interchange quickly I wanted to design a furniture set consisting of two chairs and a table that could be rearranged for different scenes, and pushed into cubes as standing and sitting platforms.
